Melog ratings: Pre-Australian Open 2016

Are these rankings technically pre-Aussie Open even though the event started over an hour ago?

(Yes, they are, because the rankings themselves don't factor in any results from the event. Moving on.)

We'll start the year off with the same format for the table as was used last year. (I'll add a couple more columns next time, to show changes in rank and rating since the year began. Obviously that information would be trivial this time.)

The year started off with a bang, and did so at the very top of the rankings, as Novak Djokovic erased his one pre-final loss of 2015 with a title at the same event this year. He won that title beating Rafael Nadal in the final (and very decisively); despite the bad loss in the last round, Nadal also gains substantially because he lost in the first round at Doha 12 months ago. (Also in Doha, Ilya Marchenko went on a very nice run to the semis and joins the top 75. He and Andrey Kuznetsov replaced Daniel Munoz de la Nava and John Millman in the table.)

Meanwhile, Roger Federer's rating slips a bit after he failed to defend his title in Brisbane. He lost the final to Milos Raonic, who avenged his defeat at that stage from last year and gains a bit - but still gets leapfrogged by Roberto Bautista Agut, whose run to the Auckland title pushes him into the top 10.

Speaking of Auckland, other results of note from the second week of play include Jack Sock's final in Auckland (moving him up one spot) and Grigor Dimitrov's final in Sydney (moving him up four). Viktor Troicki, who bested Dimitrov in that final, also won the Sydney title last year, so his ranking is relatively unchanged.

Finally, yes, I'm going to mention him again (probably every time he does something fun this year): Taylor Harry Fritz won another Challenger in Happy Valley to open the season, running his record in Melog-counted matches to 23-6 over the last 12 months. The week after that, he came through qualifiers to reach the Australian Open main draw; in the final round of qualifying, he rallied from a 4-0 third-set deficit, winning 6 straight games to seal his first berth in a Slam. (The qualies aren't counted here, but coming through them is still a good sign.)

Enough of this for now - the first Slam of the year is being played! Time to follow Philipp Kohlschreiber's traditional first-round loss after he gets a terrible draw as the best unseeded player at the event. Again.
